IPv6 Compressor and Expander

Enter an IPv6 address to see its compressed and fully expanded forms together. Both results represent the same address, so you can compare the notation without changing its value.

Enter one IPv6 address without a URL, brackets, port, CIDR prefix, or zone identifier.

Getting Both IPv6 Formats

Paste one IPv6 address into the field and select Show IPv6 Formats. The result contains a compressed address and a fully expanded address. There is no separate mode to select: each successful submission returns both forms.

You can begin with a short address such as 2001:db8::10 or with a full address containing all eight groups. The input must be an address alone, without a URL, square brackets, port, subnet prefix, or zone identifier. If a copied value contains one of those additions, separate the address from it before submitting.

Comparing the Short and Full Forms

The expanded result shows eight groups of four hexadecimal characters. Missing leading zeros are restored, and any groups omitted by a double colon appear in full. This makes the group boundaries easier to inspect when comparing an address with a configuration or a written example.

For 2001:db8::10, the expanded result is 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0010. The short form and the long form contain the same numeric information. The extra zeros do not add another network, another device, or a different destination.

The compressed result removes unnecessary leading zeros and shortens a sequence of zero groups. For example, a group written as 0db8 can become db8. Zeros that are part of the group's value are retained; shortening a representation must not change the address.

Choosing a Form for Your Next Step

The compressed form is convenient for reading an address in notes, logs, and most configuration fields. The expanded form is useful when you need to check all eight groups or compare values position by position. Choose the form supported by the software in which you will use the address.

Each result has its own copy button. Check the label before copying, then compare the pasted value with the intended result. The formatting result does not include a subnet prefix, a port number, or the brackets that another application may require around an IPv6 address.

Formatting Does Not Test the Network

A successful result means the submitted IPv6 address could be interpreted and formatted. No connection to that address is required for this operation. An address can have correct notation even when it is reserved for examples, belongs to another network, or has no reachable device.

If the address is rejected, check the punctuation and number of groups against the original value. Do not remove a nonzero group just to make the input shorter. If you receive a request limit message, wait for the stated interval before trying again.
